  • Epic Movie Alert: Battle of the Sexes

    Posted on October 3, 2017.

The movies are always a good idea, especially when it’s one starring Emma Stone and Steve Carrell, two of our absolute faves. That is exactly the case with their new movie “Battle of the Sexes,” in theaters now. This funny, thought-provoking movie is based on the true story of an
epic tennis match that took place in 1973 between Billie Jean King, who was the women’s world tennis champion at the time, and Bobby Riggs, who was the ex-men’s tennis champion.

We love this movie because it touches on so many great personal moments of the main characters, while still drawing us in and making us laugh. Beyond the obvious plot of being truly a “Battle of the Sexes” as one of the most watched sporting events of all times (with 90 million viewers… wow!), and taking place between a man and a woman during the women’s revolution, this movie goes deeper. This movie shows us touching moments that shape the lives of both Billie Jean and Bobby during the time that their “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match is ramping up to be put on the world stage as one of the greatest sporting events of all time. Billie Jean, a very private person, grapples with fighting publicly for equality for women, as she is pushed into the spotlight of this emerging issue. She also struggles with her sexuality, which gets interesting, as she is married to a man. Meanwhile, Bobby’s gambling issues come up repeatedly, threatening his well-being. Through this all, the rivalry between the two tennis champs creates the ultimate “Battle of the Sexes.”

Trust us, you won’t be able to peel your eyes away from this movie! Enjoy!

  • DIY Feng Shui

    Posted on October 2, 2017.

True adulting happens when you finally have your own space to enjoy (and be responsible for). Whether it’s your freshman dorm room, or your first apartment, you now have free reign to eat dinner in bed and leave your clothes wherever you please. Another awesome thing you now get to do? Create your own feng shui. That’s right, decorate  away and make that space your own.

It can definitely be hard to create a vibe at your place when you’re just starting out, and don’t have the money to decorate to your heart’s content. As much as we all want to go all out at Pier One, it’s just not a financial reality for many of us. That’s where DIY ideas come in! It’s kinda more fun to create it yourself, isn’t it?

To get your creative juices flowing, check out this easy to make DIY wool wall hanging. Looks super fancy, but very cheap and easy to make (it takes about 45 minutes)… now that’s what we call win-win!

Here are the supplies needed, which are all pretty much available at any craft store or on Amazon:

    -1 spool undyed wool roving
    -2 ¼-inch dowel rods
    -3 yards cotton twine
    -Ruler or yardstick
    -Scissors

Here’s how to make the wall hanging:

    1)      Use scissors to cut dowel rods down to these sizes: 24”, 15”, and 10”

    2)      Then, time to cut your wool down to these sizes: 44” (x3), 32” (x4), and 16” (x6)

    3)      Attach the longest wool (44”) to the shortest dowel (10”). Working one at a time, fold a piece of the 44 inch wool in half and place it on top of the 10 inch rod, leaving some space at the top. Loop the bottom of the wool through the space you left at the top, creating a loose knot around the rod. Tighten and fluff the knot.

    4)      Add the remaining 44” wools to the 10” dowel rod until it has 3 across.

    5)      Attach the medium wool (32”) onto the medium dowel rod (15”). Using the same process as step 3, knot the wool until there are 4 across.

    6)      Attach the shortest wool (16”) to the longest dowel (24”), and yep, you got it, repeat step 3 and knot the wool until there are 6 across.

    7)      Arrange all 3 dowels on a flat surface. Place a ruler in the middle of your top rod so that it’s sticking out vertically. Before cutting the twine, tie twine to the left end of the top dowel rod. Pull the twine to the center so that it lines up with the 12” mark on the ruler. Bring it over to the right end of the dowel rod, cut, and tie. Repeat process with each layer, using ruler for each layer so that all layers hang at correct length.

Your 3 separate wall hangings can now come together on your wall to create a gorgeous little DIY detail to your place! Enjoy!

Starbucks adding back PSLs into their offerings was the very official beginning of pumpkin spice season, and this is important because there is no other taste (or smell) that fully embodies autumn quite like pumpkin spice. • Beauty, Riri’s Way

    Posted on September 22, 2017.

Fenty Beauty by Rihanna is here, and as Naomi Campbell has said of the beauty line, it’s about time. Riri’s super-inclusive line features 40 different shades of foundation, some of which have already sold out. Her line has been especially popular with women who have darker complexions, as most mainstream beauty lines have yet to cater to their skin tones, and have struggled to find makeup that matches their skin. Rihanna is changing all of that. As the tagline says, “beauty for all.”

Everyone from celebrities to Riri’s own fans have praised the line, which consists of her mass array of foundations, a universal nude lip color for all skin tones, and MatchStix, a fun stick that highlights, blushes, and bronzes, among other products. Her line is available at Sephora, as well as on her website. Praised for its diversity and the quality of the product, Fenty Beauty has garnered compliments from celebrities such as Gabby Sidibe, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Mindy Kahling, to name a few. Rihanna is definitely changing the beauty game and stepping up where most makeup brands have fallen short, and we wouldn’t expect any less from her. Cheers to beauty for all!

  • Emmy Fashion Favorites

    Posted on September 21, 2017.

This past Sunday marked the 69th annual Emmy Awards, and what a fashion show it was! From the glamourous to the flashy to the delicately detailed, we saw a little bit of everything at the Emmys. And while we liked most of what we saw, some gowns definitely stood out and shined above the others. We really liked simple lines and subtle glamour; these are the gowns that pulled off the less-is-more vibe:

-First up is Shailene Woodley’s gorgeous forest green dress by Ralph Lauren. This velvet number featured a (very) deep V neckline, spaghetti straps that cross-crossed across her back, and a delicately pleated bottom half of the dress, underneath a cinched waist. This dress was perfect because it brought out Shailene’s natural beauty while still showing off her inner glamazon.

-Then, there was Yvonne Strahovski’s gorgeous Julien Macdonald number. This beautifully hued red dress featured clean and simple lines, a deep neckline cutting down to her midriff, and a layered slit that showed off her legs. The open spaces created by the cut makes this dress unique, but the regal red color and delicate accent jewelry keeps this look perfectly classic.

-Evan Rachel Wood mixed things up a bit by pulling off a classic look in a flared white pantsuit rather than a gown, and she looked every bit the star you would expect. Her Moschino number was a complete hit, and featured layers in the form of a little white waistcoat and a beautiful white blazer. To finish, her pants were fabulously flared. Like a true star, she finished her look with a simple, pulled-back hairstyle and dangling earrings, her style speaking for itself.

Of course, these were our favorites, but bravo to all of the women of the Emmys for their amazing fashion, this year and always!

  • Send Love to Texas

    Posted on August 31, 2017.

As we speak, Texas is reeling from what has been called “the most powerful hurricane to hit the United States in a decade,” otherwise known as Hurricane Harvey. Thousands of Texans have been affected by the flooding and sea level rise, and currently do not have access to basic necessities, like food, shelter, clean drinking water, and electricity. Animals have been affected too, as many pets have been displaced from their owners and left on their own in rising waters. It is a disaster in the truest sense of the worst.

We know you want to help, and we want to share some resources local to Texas with you that you can donate to directly, in support of hurricane victims. Here are some organizations where donations will make an immediate impact:

-The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, which has been organized by the mayor of Houston: https://ghcf.org/hurricane-relief/

-Red Cross is making it super easy to donate: text 90999 to instantly donate $10. You can also donate other amounts by visiting the Red Cross online at https://www.redcross.org/donate/hurricane-harvey

-Food banks, including the Galveston County Food Bank (http://www.galvestoncountyfoodbank.org/), the Food Bank of Corpus Christi (http://www.foodbankcc.com/), and the Houston Food Bank (http://www.houstonfoodbank.org/donate)

-Not forgetting Texas’ furry companions, consider donating to the SPCA of Texas at https://www.spca.org/hurricane-harvey, or the on-the-ground Humane Society team at https://secure.humanesociety.org/

  • Labor Day Perfection: Recipe + Outfit

    Posted on August 28, 2017.

Labor Day is that last glimpse of the sun before we head into colder months, and the perfect time to celebrate all things summer. In honor of that last long weekend of the summer, we thought we’d share some gems for that mandatory Labor Day bbq: a refreshing, easy-to make salad recipe, and our go-to outfit to kiss summer goodbye in.

Let’s start with the food! Try this fun recipe we found for a Mexican Corn & Quinoa Salad, which takes almost no time to make, and hits the spot for a light, flavorful summer salad.

    Ingredients:

    -1 cup quinoa

-4 ears worth of corn, cut from the cob

    -1/2 jalapeno, seeded and diced

    -2 green onions, sliced

    -1 handful cilantro, chopped

    -1 lime, juiced

    -2 tablespoons crumbled cotija cheese

    -chili powder to taste

-1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

    -1 avocado

    -salt and pepper to taste

    Instructions:

    1.       Cook quinoa (directions should be on package)

    2.       Combine quinoa and raw corn in a large mixing bowl with the chopped jalapeno, green onions, cilantro, lime juice, cotija cheese, and chili powder. Toss to combine.

    3.       Remove the avocado’s skin, and discard the pit. Place avocado flesh in a blender with a little lime juice and blend until smooth. Add a few tablespoons of water to smoothen the mixture – it should have a mayo-like consistency.

    4.       Toss the avocado mixture with the corn and quinoa mixture, and top with the shredded jack cheese. Season with salt and pepper to your taste. Done!

Now, onto your outfit. We have just the dress for you, Blush girl. Check out our red gingham Off The Shoulder Midi Dress, which features ruffled, layered hems, and an elastic waistband for a pretty silhouette. This dress is perfect for an end of summer gathering, with elegant lines and sun-kissed shoulders out! We love.
